Remember the GA? Jeremy Sherman, International Co-President of BBYO, sure does, especially its focus on service. Here, Jeremy tells us about his New Orleans experience.

As the International Co-President of BBYO, Jewish values inform the work that I do all the time, but when I have the opportunity to be with a group of like-minded teens the effort is magnified manifold.  I recently had the opportunity to attend the Jewish Federations of North America’s General Assembly in New Orleans. Running parallel to the GA, the PANIM Institute of BBYO hosted The Big EASY: A Jewish Teen Summit on the Environment for teens across North America.  As a participant of both programs in the two and a half days in New Orleans I learned, I served and grew my leadership and returned home with an invigorated optimism for the Jewish future. This fall, the federal government made a substantial investment in leadership development within public education. Recognized for successfully executing innovative strategies in education, KIPP received a $50 million “Scale-Up” federal grant from the Investing in Innovation (i3) Fund, part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Leading philanthropists from coast to coast joined forces to pledge an additional $10 million in matching funds required for the i3 grant. Distributed over the next five years, the combined support of $60 million is allowing KIPP to more than double its current number of students, while simultaneously impacting public schools across the country through the sharing of effective practices in leadership development. Update: The Carmel Fire Relief Fund has raised over $15,000 through the ROI Community and CLSFF networks. This has been a great example of how the network can be deployed to make a difference. Lynn’s generous offer to match donations is valid until this Sunday night, December 19th at 11 pm EST. Click here to donate. Also, if you have volunteered in the relief efforts, please email us by Sunday night, so that a contribution can be made to the fund in honor of your work.

The fire is finally out.  Now the work begins. Lynn is challenging all of us to lend support and bring relief to those in need.

For every donation made to the Carmel Fire Relief Fund by a member of the Schusterman Family Foundation network, Lynn will match that donation dollar for dollar.  And for those of you in Israel who are able to volunteer your time, efforts and resources, a donation to the fund will be made in your honor.

We encourage everyone to give a donation—even a small donation of $18.  Using the power of our network these small sums can add up to a significant contribution. Donations of up to $500 will be matched dollar for dollar over the course of the next 6 days. With our help, the people affected by this tragedy can begin rebuilding their lives. Read More »

Cross-posted from Jewcy.com. David Cygielman is the CEO of Moishe House.

As I stood outside in the near freezing Washington DC cold, it hit me that I was in line to join the President and First Lady for Hanukkah! I had received a beautiful invitation a few weeks prior in the mail, but still have no idea how I ended up getting invited to the White House for a Hanukkah celebration but Frankly, it is a lot more fun not knowing.  Id’ like to think that the President and First Lady were having dinner one night and thought, “You know who should be at our Hanukkah reception? Moishe House! They do great work!” Read More »

Watch an interview with BBYO teen Lucas Lendenbaum sharing his experience as a featured guest on the season finale of MTV’s “The Buried Life.”

Last spring the four young stars of MTV’s documentary “the buried life” spoke at BBYO’s East Coast Kallah Convention.

Their message focused on their television series that features their attempts to live out their dreams today and not get buried in the typical paths most people take in life, while at the same time giving back to strangers by helping to make their wishes come true too. BBYO was the first public audience they spoke to about the show since the series aired. Read More »

A must-read from Yahoo! News in case you missed it.

2010 In Review: Inspiring Acts
By Toan Lam  –  Yahoo! News

The catalyst: Bullying captured headlines in 2010, but a sad spate of suicides, including that of Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi, shifted public attention to harassment of gay kids.

Swift response followed, from columnist Dan Savage’s online video project, It Gets Better, to the U.S. Department of Education’s outreach to schools nationwide about Title IX enforcement.

Still, 29-year-old Brian Elliot, who recently graduated from Harvard Business School and Harvard Kennedy School with an MBA and an MPA, didn’t think change was happening quickly enough. So he tapped into the power of friends to create Friendfactor, the first gay social network for straight people. Read More »

Chanukah, known as the Jewish festival of lights, is an apt time to think about the significance of light—both its physical presence during the dark winter solstice and its symbolic representation of knowledge and wisdom.

Today, with anti-Israel activity escalating across the country, Israel facing a litany of challenges both at home and abroad, and the growing Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement,  the need for us to bring light, learning, wisdom and understanding to counter the  darkness of lies, distortions and obfuscation has taken on even greater urgency. In November, the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity announced that a vote was unanimously passed to grant honorary membership to Sandy Cardin, president of Schusterman Family Foundation, and Steve Kuperberg, executive director of the Israel on Campus Coalition.

“ZBT rarely grants honorary membership,” said Executive Director Laurence A. Bolotin. ”This is a special honor reserved for those men who truly embody the mission and values of the Fraternity in their daily lives.”

The honor is especially meaningful to us here at the Schusterman Family Foundation, as our ties to ZBT go back several generations to our founder, Charlie Schusterman, who was in ZBT at the University of Oklahoma, and to Lynn’s father, a Zebe at the University of Michigan. Read More »
