Met Cares Foundation (MCF)'s mission is to transform the academic and social outcomes of North Tulsa's PK-12 students and empower the community to organize around effective schools, increased economic opportunity and affordable housing. MCF believes change is sustainable when neighborhoods include great schools, an engaged community and robust economic development. Today, North Tulsa's predominately African American neighborhoods suffer from disproportionate levels of poverty, unemployment and blight. The performance of the public schools serving North Tulsa students is suffering as well. Each of the traditional public schools in the neighborhood that MCF seeks to serve is rated with an "F" grade. MCF's vision is that North Tulsa will be a vibrant community where children are thriving, residents are empowered to drive positive change and Black excellence is evident. In August 2017, MCF opened their first school, the Greenwood Leadership Academy. GLA is Oklahoma's first partnership school and a culmination of countless conversations, meetings and some leaps of faith. GLA currently serves 175 pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and first grade students with a staff of 21 teachers, aides and administrative staff and will ultimately expand to grade five.
