Andres Aguilera Guzman
Andres is from Santiago, Chile. Although raised a Catholic, when he was 17 his mother told him that he was Jewish. As a result, Andres decided to learn more about his Jewish heritage and history and became increasingly involved in the Jewish community. While studying political science at university, his energy and enthusiasm led him to become a member of the Student Union and also a volunteer firefighter at the very unique Bomba Israel, a Jewish fire brigade located in Santiago, where he is still serving as an officer. Andres is an active member of one of the largest political parties in Chile and former Political Advisor at the Embassy of Israel in Chile, also previously served at the Chilean National Congress as an adviser to a Chilean senator. He was also deputy director of the Futures Congress, which organizes the most significant scientific congress in Latin America. Andres is also a very enthusiastic member of the local Jewish community, where he participates in Nuevas Generaciones, a WJC program for young leaders and through which he travelled to Israel in 2017 to participate in a meeting of young Jewish leaders from around the globe (YJLDS of the MFA). Andres also volunteers with the youth group of the local Sephardic community and is the leader of the Schusterman TOM (Tikkun Olam Makers) initiative in Chile, which took place last November in Santiago.
