Dean is from Melbourne, Australia. Growing up, he benefited greatly from every opportunity the Australian Jewish community had to offer: attending a Jewish day school, playing sport for Maccabi, participating in a Jewish youth movement, and engaging in everything in between. Dean is passionate about the Jewish community, youth leadership, and disability. Dean combined these passions to found Flying Fox, an organisation that believes in the power of community and has built a framework for people with a disability to find their tribe through a range of social opportunities and a well-respected immersive camp model. Flying Fox was seed-funded by a Dave Grant in 2014, facilitated by the Launchpad network. Since its inception in 2014 it has run camps for over 200 young people with a disability, and over 400 young adults have been trained to volunteer on the camps and to work in the disability sector. Ultimately, Flying Fox is striving to create systemic change by mobilising an entire generation of young Jews to create an inclusive community for people of all abilities. As the CEO, Dean's primary responsibilities are fundraising and community engagement, ensuring strong governance processes, and facilitating a youth-movement-like environment where young people are empowered to take charge of the organisation.
