Joel was inspired by Taglit-Israel, where the experience he shared with fellow Indian Jews in Israel led him to deepen his engagement with Jewish tradition and the Jewish community. Since his Birthright trip, Joel has demonstrated commitment to Jewish leadership through his work with senior citizens, as well as by studying and teaching Torah at India's JCC and ORT. Currently, Joel works as an Assistant Kosher Supervisor for J. K. Kosher. He is also working on a project called "Our Hidden Scholars" with his wife Sigalith, who is also a member of ROI Community. For this project, Joel and Sigalith are searching for unrecognized leaders who have achieved a substantial amount of success in their professional careers, have strong traditional backgrounds, and have intentions to contribute to the betterment of their communities, but have not had a chance to tell their stories before. They believe that showcasing these "Hidden Scholars" will be beneficial both to the scholars themselves and to the community as a whole.
