musician, artistic director, Mish-Mash et Compagnie
Marine, a professional musician who plays the clarinet and flute, lives in Paris. She regularly performs all over the world (France, Israel, New York, Bucarest, to name a few) with her band Le Petit Mish-Mash and is often invited to teach as well. When she was a child her father ran a Yiddish theater company in which she often participated, and this meaningful cultural heritage was a major influence on her current path. She studied theater, recorder, and clarinet at the Strasbourg Conservatory (France) and then continued her studies at the CNSM of Lyon, where she earned an M.A. in musical research and interpretation. Marine performs with a number of different ensembles and theater companies, such as Der Luft Theater, Beliashe, and Le Guépart Echappée (France). She became fascinated by klezmer music, and has traveled around Romania researching the relationship between klezmer and gypsy music and has even studied with the lăutar Cezar Cazanoi [a lăutar is a member of a professional clan of Romani musicians], considered one of the most important figures of traditional gypsy/Romani music in Bucharest today. Marine is also a community builder. In 2016, she established Mish-Mash et Compagnie, dedicated to the promotion and transmission of traditional Eastern European Jewish and non-Jewish music and culture. Each year some 150 students participate in her program and every summer she organizes a retreat for over 40 musicians, who come together to create a new musical shtetl!
