Yaakov is from Costa Rica, in Central America, a descendant of Sephardic Jews who came to the Caribbean from Portugal and Spain. Yaakov’s family embarked on a path of returning to the Judaism of his ancestors, which he has embraced with deep love and commitment. Yaakov has been an active member of the Jewish community in Costa Rica since he was a teenager in a variety of areas (religion, education, art, culture). He has been a practicing dentist for 17 years. He studied in Jerusalem in the Shehebar Sephardic Center, where he trained to be a cantor and a rabbi, but ultimately chose not to complete the course. Yaakov has worked as a Hebrew teacher, and a teacher of Jewish history, culture, and religion, as well as being a board member and community leader. His talent for singing has garned him much acclaim and he has been invited to peform in numerous Jewish institutions on various occasions, when he presents the beauty of Jewish music and sings song in Hebrew, Ladino, and Yiddish. Yaakov has also served as a cultural emissary in the official activities of the Israeli embassy in Costa Rica and has had the opportunity to sing in communities throughout the Caribbean. He is currently the founder and leader of Talmud Torah Beit Shalom, a community created for Jews who do not find their place in any of the existing synagogues, and have found in this initiative a welcoming space that enables them to remain connected to their Judaism.
